The Chapel Choir
The King’s College Chapel Choir is celebrated throughout the Maritimes and has been known across Canada for its professional-level choral singing in services and concerts. The Chapel Choir comprises 20 choristers from across Canada who study at King’s College and Dalhousie University, and four section leads who serve as mentors for the student choristers. The choir’s primary function is to sing at the weekly Evensong and Eucharist services in the King’s College Chapel, as well as other major services throughout the academic year. In addition to services in the chapel, the Chapel Choir performs at least one concert each academic term.
Schedule
The regular weekly schedule in term is as follows:
Tuesday Rehearsal, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Wednesday Evensong, 4:00 p.m. rehearsal for a 5:00 p.m. service (5:00 - 6:00 p.m.)
Thursday Eucharist, 4:00 p.m. rehearsal for a 5:00 p.m. service (5:00 - 6:30 p.m.)
In addition to the regular schedule of rehearsals and services, there are extra rehearsals, services, and concerts around the busy seasons of Christmas and Easter.
The full schedule is announced at the start of each term.
Membership
Membership of the Chapel Choir is open to King’s and Dalhousie students, and occasionally students from other local academic institutions depending on capacity. The Chapel Choir comprises students enrolled in a wide variety of degree programs, not just Music.
Level
The Chapel Choir operates at an advanced level. Previous choral experience, a high level of proficiency with musical notation, and an ability to sight-sing are all desirable.
Scholarships
Choral and organ scholarships ($500 - $3,500) are available to students who pass an audition. Further information can be found here.
Section Leads & Substitute Singers
Paid Section Lead (Lay Clerk) positions are held by professional singers; one each of Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass. These positions are filled in an annual application and audition process. We also maintain a substitute paid singer list to cover absences, and to enlarge the group for specific performances.
To apply for a Section Lead position or to be a substitute singer for the 2025/26 season, please send a résumé, specifying your choral voice part and previous choral experience to music@ukings.ca.
